NOVEL
  • A long prose fiction which represents humans in significant action in their world.

THEME
  • An observation of life which serves as the controlling idea in a literary work.
  • Usually an abstract idea, surfacing through action and dialogue of characters OR through the use of symbols or recurring images.

SYMBOLISM
  • A method of exploring the unknown through the known.
  • Familiar objects are used to represent the unfamiliar, so that the reader can transfer characteristics of the known to the unknown.

  • The creation of believable fictitious personalities.
